Work Boot Glossary

The words a spec sheet and a boot tag use, and the ones a product page hopes you never ask about, defined plainly.

Toe Types

Steel Toe
A safety cap made of steel: the slimmer option, and it conducts heat and cold.
Composite Toe
A non-metallic safety cap (fiberglass, plastic or similar composites).
Carbon-Fiber Toe
A non-metallic cap made with carbon fiber, usually pitched as a lighter composite option.
Alloy Toe
A metal cap made from a lighter alloy than steel, such as aluminum or titanium blends.
Soft Toe
No protective toe cap; suitability depends on the workplace assessment.
Safety Toe (Protective Toe)
Any boot with a toe cap marked for impact and compression.

By Trade

Wedge Sole
A flat, one-piece sole with no separate heel; popular on hard, flat floors.

Waterproof & Insulated

Waterproof Membrane
A liner built into the boot to keep water out while letting some vapor escape.
Gusseted Tongue
A tongue stitched to the upper on both sides so water and debris stay out.
Insulation Grams
How makers state insulation: more grams is warmer, but also bulkier.

Fit & Sizing

Width Sizing
Letter widths such as D, E, EE or EW: check which ones the exact model comes in.
Half Sizes
In-between sizes: many work boots run to half sizes and a few do not.
Break-In
The short period leather boots take to soften and shape to the foot.
Last
The foot-shaped form a boot is built around; it decides fit more than the size number.
Toe Box
The front section that holds the toes; caps and lasts decide how much room it has.

Care & Resoling

Goodyear Welt
A stitched construction that lets a sole be replaced.
Cement Construction
A sole glued to the upper: lighter and flexible, and usually not built for resoling.
Resoling
Replacing a worn outsole. For safety-toe boots, ask what it does to the marking.
Full-Grain Leather
Leather with the natural surface intact; durable, and it can be conditioned.

Safety Standards

ASTM F2413
The standard that defines performance requirements for protective (safety) toe footwear.
ASTM F2892
Requirements for specified protective properties of soft-toe footwear.
Impact Designation: I and Older I/75
Read impact notation together with the standard edition.
Compression Designation: C and Older C/75
Read compression notation together with the standard edition.
Metatarsal Guard (Mt)
Optional protection over the top of the foot, marked Mt.
Puncture Resistant (PR)
A sole marked as passing the standard’s puncture test, for nails and sharp scrap.
EH (Electrical Hazard)
A sole and heel marked as passing an electrical test, as secondary protection in dry conditions.
Conductive (Cd) & Static Dissipative (SD)
Two static-control marks that are different jobs from EH and not substitutes for it.
Slip Resistance (SR, SRO)
Verify the exact model, standard edition and test conditions.
Standard Edition Year
The two digits after the dash in ASTM F2413-18: the year of that edition of the standard.
OSHA Footwear Rule (29 CFR 1910.136)
The US rule that calls for protective footwear where there is a danger of foot injury.

Accessories

Footbed (Insole)
The removable layer under your foot; swapping it can change what the marking applies to.

Comparisons

Variant
One model name can cover steel-toe, composite-toe and soft-toe versions.
