Does OSHA require steel toe boots, and does my employer pay for them?

OSHA’s rule 29 CFR 1910.136 calls for protective footwear where there is a danger of foot injuries from falling or rolling objects or from objects piercing the sole, or an electrical hazard that remains after other protective measures. Separately, 1910.132(h)(2) says an employer need not pay for non-specialty safety-toe footwear when it permits wearing it off the job site. Rules differ by industry and state, and this is general information, not legal advice; ask your employer.
