Timberland PRO vs Wolverine Work Boots: Which Is Better?

Short answer: pick by toe type and listed ratings, not by brand
Neither brand is better across the board. On the four boots compared here, the Timberland PRO Pit Boss and Keele Ridge are steel-toe boots that Timberland lists with electrical hazard (EH) protection, Wolverine's Overpass is a composite-toe boot whose Amazon listing names EH, and Wolverine's Floorhand waterproof 6-inch is filed as a soft-toe boot with no EH listed. Decide which toe type and ratings your job requires first, then let waterproofing, build and cushioning break the tie.

How this comparison was built
We did not test this product ourselves; this review is built from the manufacturer's published specifications and Amazon's product listing.
The boot details below come from Timberland's and Wolverine's own product pages. Each boot's Amazon listing is used to name it and to check its toe and EH claims; where the listing and the maker's page could describe different versions, the article says so.
The four boots side by side
| Timberland PRO Pit Boss 6" | Timberland PRO Keele Ridge | Wolverine Floorhand WP 6" | Wolverine Overpass | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toe, per the listing and maker's page | Steel safety toe | Steel safety toe | No safety toe on the listing; soft toe on Wolverine's page | Composite toe |
| EH | Listed | Listed | Not listed | Listed on the listing (ASTM F2413-11 M I/75 C/75 EH) |
| Waterproofing | Not listed | Waterproof membrane | Waterproof leather, waterproof membrane | Premium waterproof leather |
| Slip resistance | Slip-Resistant (SR) badge | Slip-Resistant (SR) badge | Slip-resistant outsole, no rating named | Not listed |
| Construction | Goodyear welt | Cement | Lightweight cement | ContourWelt |
| Shank or plate | Contoured shock-diffusion plate | Nylon shank | Nylon shank | Nylon shank |
| Cushioning named | 24/7 Comfort System, OrthoLite insoles | OrthoLite insoles | Removable full-cushion footbed, rubber midsole | Removable OrthoLite footbed, PU midsole |
"Listed" means the maker's page or listing for that boot says so. "Not listed" means neither mentions it, which is not the same as the boot lacking it. The Overpass column's footbed and midsole come from Wolverine's page for the CarbonMAX version, which the Amazon listing does not name.
Two definitions help with the EH and slip rows. Timberland's technology glossary describes its Electric Hazard badge as "secondary underfoot protection against live electrical circuits, electrically energized conductors, parts or apparatus less than 600 volts," and its Slip-Resistant Outsole (SR) badge as meeting "the SR requirements of ASTM F2413, F2892, or F3445, when tested to F2913." Wolverine's technology page says its "Special EH construction helps protect the wearer from electrical current on dry surfaces." So Timberland calls EH secondary protection, and Wolverine ties it to dry surfaces.
Timberland PRO: Pit Boss and Keele Ridge
The Timberland PRO Pit Boss 6 Inch Steel Toe is the welted boot of the two. Timberland's page lists an asymmetrical steel safety toe, electric hazard protection, a contoured shock-diffusion plate, Goodyear welt construction, a nubuck leather upper with a padded top collar, and a rubber outsole it calls heat-, oil-, slip- and abrasion-resistant. For comfort it names the Timberland PRO 24/7 Comfort Suspension System, which it says is designed to help reduce foot fatigue, plus OrthoLite insoles. The page also notes that wide sizes are available. It does not list waterproofing, so if rain or wet floors are part of the job, check the Amazon listing for that before you order.
The Timberland PRO Keele Ridge Steel Toe Waterproof trades that build for a hiker-style one. Timberland describes it as a work hiker with a steel safety toe, a waterproof leather and mesh upper with an internal waterproof membrane, electrical hazard protection, a nylon shank, cement construction and a slip- and abrasion-resistant rubber outsole. The page also lists metallic hardware.
In practice the two Timberland boots share one protection list (steel toe, EH, SR badge) and differ in build: a welted boot with no waterproofing listed against a cement-built hiker with a waterproof membrane. That reading is ours, not a maker claim.
Wolverine: Floorhand and Overpass
The Wolverine Floorhand Waterproof 6 Inch Boot is the one to read carefully. Its Amazon listing names full-grain waterproof leather, a rubber outsole and a cushioned footbed, and no safety toe. Wolverine's page for the Floorhand Waterproof 6-inch (style W10643) is filed under Soft Toe, and the steel-toe version (style W10694) is a separate product with its own page. The soft-toe page lists a waterproof full-grain leather upper, a breathable waterproof membrane with a moisture-wicking mesh lining, a slip-resistant outsole, a removable full-cushion footbed, a rubber midsole, lightweight cement construction and a nylon shank. It lists no EH and no ASTM rating.
The Wolverine Overpass Composite Toe Waterproof Work Boot is the safety-toe Wolverine in this comparison. Its Amazon listing names a "Composite Toe ASTM F2413-11 M I/75 C/75 EH," premium waterproof leather with an abrasion-resistant toe and contour welt construction. Wolverine's page for the Overpass CarbonMAX 6-inch boot (style W080167) cites the newer F2413-18 edition and adds a removable OrthoLite footbed, a PU midsole, a dual-compound rubber and PU outsole and a nylon shank. Neither lists a slip rating. Wolverine describes its CarbonMAX safety toe as "lightweight, non-conductive to electricity and resists extreme cold and heat," but the Amazon listing does not say CarbonMAX, so the footbed, midsole, outsole and shank details may belong to a newer version. The EH line is on the listing itself.
Which boot fits which job
The lineups do not match one for one, so the brand question turns into a category question. Compare steel with steel (the Pit Boss or Keele Ridge against Wolverine's separate steel-toe Floorhand, whose page lists an "ASTM F2413-18 M I/75 C/75 EH rated steel toe") or composite with composite. Our reading of the pages:
- You need a steel toe, EH and an SR badge, and the floor is dry: the Pit Boss matches that list on Timberland's page.
- Same protection, but wet conditions are part of the day: the Keele Ridge is the one of the two with a waterproof membrane listed.
- You want a non-metallic toe with EH and waterproof leather: the Overpass, whose listing names all three.
- The job has no toe hazard and you want waterproofing and a slip-resistant outsole: the Floorhand, accepting that its page lists no EH.
If your employer or site specifies a rating, that requirement outranks every row above. Read the safety label on the boot you receive and compare it with the requirement before you wear it to work.
What the pages leave out
- Weight. Timberland lists a men's size 9 weight (2.83 lb for both the Pit Boss and the Keele Ridge). The Wolverine pages for the Floorhand and Overpass list none, so a cross-brand weight comparison is not possible from the pages.
- Slip resistance. Timberland shows an SR badge on both of its boots. Wolverine's Floorhand says "slip resistant" without naming a standard, and the Overpass page does not mention slip resistance at all.
- Waterproofing on the Pit Boss. Not listed on Timberland's page.
- Fit. Timberland's Pit Boss page carries a "Wides Available" label. For the two Wolverine boots, check the size and width options on the listing.
Check these before you order
- Toe type. The Floorhand listing names no safety toe; if you need one, Wolverine's steel-toe Floorhand (W10694) is a separate product.
- Version. For the Overpass, the EH line is on the listing; the CarbonMAX details on Wolverine's page may belong to a newer version.
- The label. A maker's page describes a style; the label inside your boot is what you are actually wearing.
